August is a month that’s always action packed full of events from start to finish! The village is buzzing with people, the bike park is busy with riders doing laps top to bottom and the weather can be some of the best of the summer!
August starts off with the BC Day long weekend August 2 – 4, 2013 and the annual Canadian National BBQ Championships. Enjoyable for all ages, this legendary summer competition welcomes BBQ Champions from all over the globe to complete for the title of the “American Royal World Championship” winner. What’s summer without BBQ and this event brings you the best in the world to sample and enjoy!
While here for the long weekend you can take some time to wind down and prepare for the rest of the months excitement with Whistler’s second annual Wanderlust Festival. This event brings Yogis from around the globe, inviting everyone to celebrate wellness, food & wine from August 1 – 4, 2013.
Augusts’ most popular event is the amazing Crankworks festival. This 10 day action packed, adrenaline filled event includes some intense competitions set over August 9 – 18, 2013! Competitions include downhill races, dual slaloms, giant slaloms, best trick showdowns and big air events! Never failing to impress, this event is one not to be missed!
And, here we go from one bike event to the next where this one is toned down a notch. Fun for all ages, everyone is invited to participate and head up to Pemberton on August 18, 2013 for the annual Slow Food Cycle! Ride down the Pemberton Meadows Road and enjoy the picturesque scenery, stopping at local farms along the way sampling fresh produce and goodies.
This brings us to the end of the month, August 24 & 25, 2013 with two back to back intense sporting events! August 24, 2013 is the 5 Peaks Trail Running Series taking contestants off the road and into the forest running over rocks, roots, tree stumps, logs, up ski hills, through snow, puddles mud and more! This race features steep climbs, sharp descents and some rough terrain! Come cheer on these participants as they battle Blackcomb Mountain. August 25, 2013 welcomes Ironman Canada, one of the world’s toughest triathlons winding its way through Whistler’s trails, pristine lakes and mountain roads. Participants swim Alta lake not once but twice then they make the transition and bike to the Callaghan Valley then all the way to Pemberton and back. The final transition is made when they take on running the Valley Trail winding through Whistler’s pristine valley. This event finishes at Whistler Olympic Plaza so come and cheer on the contestants as they come through the finish line completing the longest and most intense triathlon they may endure.
